America’s Cup: Interview expletives referred to Arbitration Panel

An incident involving Ben Ainslie, the skipper of INEOS Britannia, and a New Zealand television commentator during a live interview has been brought to the attention of the America’s Cup Arbitration Panel. Following a race in which INEOS Britannia was defeated for the third time in a row, Ainslie responded sharply to a comment implying that his team’s boat was not as fast as the Team New Zealand Defender. The exchange ended abruptly with Ainslie making a derogatory remark, which was picked up by a live microphone and broadcasted.

A complaint was lodged with the Arbitration Panel under Rule 69 Misconduct of the Racing Rules of sailing – America’s Cup edition. The panel, comprised of experienced judges from the Olympic and America’s Cup levels, also looked into a similar incident involving New Zealand skipper Peter Burling. However, it was determined that neither Ainslie nor Burling had committed misconduct that warranted further action.

This incident has sparked discussion within the sailing community, but ultimately, the Arbitration Panel concluded that the broadcast did not cause widespread offense or bring the sport into disrepute.
