Time to Turn Up the Heat for Alinghi Red Bull Racing
29 August – 7 October 2024
During the third day of the Louis Vuitton Cup, Alinghi Red Bull Racing faced a challenging match against British rivals. The British team executed their strategy flawlessly, causing the Swiss boat to stall and struggle from the get-go.
Once Alinghi’s BoatOne regained flight in 6-7 knot winds, their chances hinged on the British boat losing altitude. In a nail-biting finish, the British team managed to stay on their foils, ultimately sealing their victory. With diminishing wind conditions, the subsequent match against Emirates Team New Zealand faced postponement, with plans for extra races on the following day.
Arnaud Psarofaghis, the Skipper, remarked: “At the moment, we’re making our lives too difficult and making it easier for our opponents. We need to sail the boat to its full potential.”
Board Member Brad Butterworth emphasized the importance of a strong start: “We need to improve our starts. Three poor starts have resulted in three losses. Competing against the world’s best means that we can’t afford to give them any advantage. The British team positioned themselves in front of us, disrupting our flight and effectively ending our chances of winning.”
Cyclor Augustin Maillefer shared his insights on the pressures of racing: “Seeing our boat dropping off the foils during the pre-start indicates a tough challenge ahead. As a cyclor, the focus shifts to getting the boat back in the air and attempting to catch up. It’s crucial to stay united as a team and maintain effort until the end, as we almost turned the situation around in the final leg.”
