Women’s World Match Racing Tour Set to Compete in Denmark

Women’s World Match Racing Tour Heads to Denmark

5-8 September 2024

The fifth stage of the 2024 Women’s World Match Racing Tour is set to take place in Denmark from September 5-8. Hosted by the Royal Danish Yacht Club (KDY), this exciting event will feature ten teams from seven nations competing at KDY’s Rungsted venue, located approximately 25km north of Copenhagen. The Women’s World Match Racing Tour is celebrated as the only all-women professional series in sailing, which was founded in 2022.

The line-up for the 2024 Women’s WMRT Denmark includes over sixty female athletes representing eleven nations. Leading skippers include Australia’s Brooke Wilson, the USA’s Bridget Groble, Sweden’s Martina Carlsson, and Julia D’Amodio from France, along with Ireland’s Nicole Hemeryck.

Royal Danish Yacht Club Commodore Anne-Sofie Munk Hansen expressed the club’s pride in hosting the Women’s World Match Racing Tour Denmark stage for the third consecutive year. “We are very proud to support the growth of women in sailing and we are honoured to welcome the world’s top female match racing sailors to compete in Denmark this week,” she stated.

Julia Aarsten from the Netherlands returns to Denmark with her team, ‘Team Out of the Box,’ after finishing fifth at last year’s event. She is keen to secure a podium finish, having reached the semi-finals during the Tour’s earlier stages in France and Sweden this season.

While defending event champion Anna Östling and the Wing’sSailing team from Sweden will not be participating due to commitments in the Women’s America’s Cup in Barcelona, competitors can expect fierce rivalry from four notable Danish teams. These teams, featuring skippers Lea Vogelius, Camilla Ulrikkeholm, Kristine Mauritzen, and Louise Olesen, along with their crews, are highly experienced with the DS37 yachts designed for match racing, and are based year-round at the Royal Danish Yacht Club.

The largest boats used on the Women’s World Match Racing Tour, the DS37s, accommodate up to seven crew members. However, most teams will sail with six crew this week, emphasizing the necessity for strong teamwork.
